Physiotherapy

Bowel Health In Geelong.

At Phyisopod Co, our Women’s Health Physiotherapists offer compassionate care for bowel disorders like incontinence and constipation.

A lot of problems can occur with the functioning of the bowels. We understand the unique challenges women face in this area and provide personalised treatments tailored to your needs.

It is important to take note of your bowel habits and if anything irregular is occurring. In the case that there are areas of concern, many problems can be helped with the implication of tools from one of our physiotherapists.

The following are common examples of bowel dysfunction that physiotherapy can assist you with:

  • Anal pain
  • Constipation
  • Faecal incontinence and urgency
  • Flatulence incontinence
  • Obstructed defecation

Sometimes it may feel like there is a barrier to emptying, this can be caused by:

  • Rectocele
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Intussusception
  • Excessive perineal descent

Assessment

The bulk of assessment for bowel dysfunction is done by discussing your symptoms, history, current bowel habits and lifestyle habits. We understand talking about fecal issues may be embarrassing for some, but our team of physiotherapists are well experienced in these conditions and strive to create a safe, open and welcoming environment. There is nothing to feel embarrassed about.

As part of the assessment of your bowel condition, your physio may also ask for your consent to perform an internal examination.

This is very useful for understanding the level of support your pelvic floor muscles and/or your anal sphincter muscles are providing and if there are any signs of mechanistic changes such as a prolapse.

Treatment

Treatment for bowel dysfunction varies depending on the cause(s). Your physiotherapist will work with you to create an individual treatment plan based on your condition. Whilst some of the underlying diseases that cause bowel dysfunction are not curable, treating the symptoms is achievable and can prevent complications and improve the overall quality of your life.

Treatment can begin with explaining the anatomy and function of the colon, anorectum (anus & rectum) and general pelvic region. Your physiotherapist may introduce pelvic floor muscle exercises to improve your ability to control your urine, faeces, and wind. Alternatively, if you are having trouble emptying, your physiotherapist may introduce relaxation strategies for healthy bowel movements or stool softening advice.

Depending on the results of your assessment, the condition may require the use of muscle retraining exercises and/or pessary use.
