What is Pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain is a broad area and includes pain felt anywhere from the belly button to the top of their legs. This pain may be constant or come and go, and can be aggravated by periods, sex, urination, or other activities.
Did you know – pelvic pain affects up to 25% of our population, which is more common than asthma at 10%!
There are a lot of conditions that can cause pelvic pain in individuals. Some common ones that our physiotherapists see include:
- Endometriosis
- Vaginismus
- PCOS
- Vulvodynia
- Bladder Pain Syndrome
- Pudendal Neuralgia
- Proctalgia Fugax
What can we do to help?
If you suffer from any of these conditions, you will be glad to know that physiotherapy has a strong potential to help you manage the pain. As with any condition, the first step will be to sit down with your pelvic health specialist to discuss your concerns.
Your physio will walk you through your concern, assessing your movements, breathing and history with the condition. It is important to get a good history of your condition, no matter how long ago your pain started, it is helpful for us to note if a condition may have been brought on by a previous event such as a fall, issues with constipation, painful first period or trauma. The lasting effect of painful experiences can mean that our body has developed unhelpful habits in other areas of the body that hinder the improvement of your condition.
Following this, your physio may ask for you consent to conduct an internal assessment of you pelvic floor. This will help your physio get a full picture of how your pelvic floor muscles are working and if there are contributing factors such as overactive pelvic floor.
A diagnosis will then be made and your physio will empower you with knowledge, advice and a unique treatment plan to place you on a clear path to your goals.
