What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is a very useful treatment option in the management of chronic soft tissue injuries. Two of the most common injuries where Shockwave Therapy can be utilised is:
- Achilles Tendinopathy
- Plantar Fasciitis
Our state of the art Shockwave machine can help by reducing pain and stimulating the healing process. It uses compressed air to produce an acoustic “wave” through the applicator on the surface of the skin. There is no electrical shock like the name suggests.
The use of Shockwave is not used as a stand alone treatment. It is used along with targeted exercise, footwear modification, taping and use of foot orthotics.
What does Shockwave Therapy feel like?
It has been described by patients as feeling like a thumb tapping on the sore spot. It is expected that feel some mild/moderate discomfort which can be adjusted during the treatment. After a treatment, there is often a dull ache around the area which is unlikely to last for longer than a day or two. After shockwave, we advise that you don’t participate in any high intensity exercise for around 2-3 days after an application.
How many treatments are needed?
Most people will require 3-4 Shockwave therapy sessions. This is done once a week with between 5-8 days between each treatment. The amount of treatments varies from person to person and what the goals are. The first session is performed free of charge (no additional fee on top of consult fee) to see how you respond and if this is the right treatment option for you.
How do I know if I need Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is most commonly advised for chronic non-resolving tendon pain and heel pain, such as Achilles Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis. If other management has been attempted without improvement, this is when Shockwave may be useful. Your Podiatrist will advise you during your treatment pathway if you are a candidate for Shockwave Therapy.
